PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 13, 2025

SHERLOCK HOLMES and "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly" is at Airship 27 waiting for publication and I am hard at work writing that HUGH MONN, PRIVATE DETECTIVE PREQUEL NOVEL. No subtitle yet, but it's still early in the first draft of the manuscript.

The first chapter is completed and I am currently working on the second that sets up the case that will take up the majority of the book as HUGH apprentices with an already established Private Detective so he can earn his own license and go into business for himself.

Obviously there is still a long way to go before I have to make a final decision on whether or not to self publish, but considering there have been no (serious) offers from any existing publisher...
I'm certainly not opposed to taking matters into my own hands because it would be nice to be my own boss for a change, but a final decision on that isn't necessary until around sometime next spring at the earliest.

Now before I conclude this post, a quick shout out and apology to JEFF DEISCHER and everyone else who tried to leave a comment about something on this blog and couldn't.
I have no idea when Google did so, but they've changed the system so now you need some variety of a Google account to leave a message here.
Explains why I haven't gotten many responses to things I've posted recently. 😉
Yet if you don't have a Google account, I'm still accessible on Blue Sky and Facebook.

In any event, I better get back to writing now.
Take care.
STAY SAFE!
And I'll see you around the Internet.

A SERIOUS DISCUSSION ABOUT MY WRITING FUTURE

Although I did write this past week, I am forgoing my regular weekly PROGRESS REPORT in favor of sharing with all the readers and fans out there my thoughts and future plans concerning my writing career.

I've been teasing and talking about it as much as I can for awhile now, but at this point I seriously doubt there will ever be an official, public announcement so here goes.
That MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING that I've often mentioned in recent months?
What was Pro Se Press/Productions is no more.
Kaput. Gone out of business. Permanently closed.
It's dead Jim.
It's no longer pining for the fjords like Monty Python's Norwegian Blue Parrot.

ANYWAY...
Those of us with any connection to the company were notified earlier this Spring on the matter.
I won't get into all the whys, wherefores and other legalities.
It was fun while it lasted.
So long and thanks for all the fish.
If you find an active link to anything Pro Se once published, it's either on the Back Issue Market or they accidentally missed something delisting everything.

In the process, all rights to everything reverted back to their original creators.
In my case, HUGH MONN PRIVATE DETECTIVE, ALPHA the superhero and various short stories are now orphans looking for a new publishing home.
Unfortunately that does not also include the original cover art and logos since other people made them, and I really liked David Russell's art on HUGH and Sean Ali's ALPHA logo.
On the other hand I had originally only wanted to call ALPHA's first book PROJECT ALPHA and not use that as an umbrella title for the entire series.
I guess you've got to take the good with the bad.

SO WHAT NEXT?

While I am open to the option of another publisher if I can find the right one, I am also looking into the possibility of self publishing under my own imprint.
Whichever route I take, I am hoping to have something totally fresh available for everyone to read by this time next year at the latest.

I am starting with HUGH MONN first, because that has the most material to work with.
I am writing a BRAND NEW PREQUEL NOVEL that will set up the entire series anew.
After that I will be incorporating the short stories from the original collection that either had been or were scheduled for publication in Pro Se's Masked Gun Mystery magazine with new material for at least the next two books in the series.
The next novel after that will be a rerelease of what was HUGH's first full length adventure: CATCH A RISING STAR.
Then there will hopefully be a brand new novel before the rerelease of FEMME FATALES.
Afterwards, whether or not there will be another new novel first, I will then finally finish writing what would have been HUGH's fourth novel for Pro Se, had things not gone south when they did.

Please note that when I talk about reviewing what was previously released, I intend to base everything on the original manuscripts and NOT what was actually published.
While my ego is firmly in check as I type this, I do think that I have grown as a writer since HUGH was first published and I did not always agree with some of the edits that my printed material previously experienced along the way.

Yet while HUGH will kick things off, that does not mean he will be the only project I tackle.
There is ALPHA and that SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL that I never found a publisher for.
Plus I still have all those short stories and who knows what else I will come up with along the way?

In any event, I better get back to work on that HUGH PREQUEL now.
Take care.
STAY SAFE!
Have a great week and I'll see you around the Internet.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING AUGUST 30, 2025

 I HAVE FINISHED WRITING
SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE ADVENTURE OF THE SHAKESPEAREAN FOLLY!😁

I still have to finish proofreading the manuscript before adding my behind the scenes essay and Author's Bio so I can send it off to Airship 27, but obviously once all that is done the big question before me is: WHAT NEXT?

There has still been no official, public announcement on that MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING, although a lot of you have already accurately guessed what is going on, if not all of the reason(s) why.

I can tell you that I have not been sitting idly by twiddling my thumbs when not working on Holmes.
I have been researching and studying my options.
What comes next will be a big step for yours truly, but while not fully prepared yet, it is one I am willing to take and hope for the best on.

But what I have in mind will also require a LOT of writing, so I better get back to it now.

Take care.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING AUGUST 23, 2025

 ALMOST, BUT NOT QUITE.

Been working hard on trying to conclude the first draft of SHERLOCK HOLMES and "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly", but life has had other ideas most of last week.😒
Hopefully I can complete the manuscript this coming week, but we'll have to see how it goes.

And no new news on that MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING at this time either.

With that in mind, I better get back to writing now.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING AUGUST 16, 2025

While it is not totally finished yet, the conclusion of SHERLOCK HOLMES and "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly" IS in sight!😀

But then what?

Once the HOLMES story is completed, I will be taking a couple of days off to relax from Victorian England before returning to give the tale a final proofreading as well as adding my Creation Of Essay and my usual Author Bio before sending it off to Airship 27.

But what do I do in-between and past HOLMES?

It has to do with that MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING.
I've had a few friends and fans ask about it.
One was actually correct in their assumption of what was going on, although not the reason(s) why.
Unfortunately I still cannot officially discuss it publicly yet.
All this teasing is as close as I can come to saying anything at the moment, and even this is questionable at best but I should be safe since I haven't given any actual details nor neither confirmed or denied any speculations.

In any event, I better get back to writing now.
Take care.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING AUGUST 9, 2025

It was mostly research again this past week, not only for SHERLOCK HOLMES and "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly" but also for that MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING.

I'm sure some astute web surfers out there have already figured it out, or at least suspect what it is but unfortunately I still cannot officially say anything at this time.

When possible, I will, especially considering I HAVE been working hard on trying to find a solution to the issue.

Until then, I better get back to writing now.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING AUGUST 2, 2025

Work proceeds apace on SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE ADVENTURE OF THE SHAKESPEAREAN FOLLY.

I had to stop and do some research last week in regards to The Bard's plays, but it has paid off as the story approaches the 10,000 (out of 15,000 for the average Airship 27 short story) word mark.

I'm sure that at least a few astute observers out there have noticed changes to some key Amazon listings in recent days, if not the Facebook pages of myself and a few other people as well.

Unfortunately all that is part of the MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING that I still cannot officially discuss with anyone publicly at this time, but rest assured that myself and everyone else involved are working on the problem(s) and, in my case, once the SHERLOCK HOLMES story is finished, I will be devoting my full attention to the matter, even if I have to wait awhile longer before I can actually say in complete detail what is going on.

With that in mind, I better get back to writing now.
Take care.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING JULY 26, 2025

Alas last week was NOT a good one, writing wise. Barely managed 300 words on SHERLOCK HOLMES: "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly" since the last Progress Report, but at least that's 300 more words than I had.

There just isn't really enough time in any given day after I take care of life and everything else I have to.
With apologies to Douglas Adams, the universe can take care of itself.

There have been some new wrinkles in the MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING that is going to affect my writing, but unfortunately I still cannot officially talk about it with you folks yet.
Given time, I hope to be able to speak about what is happening/had happened and the future, but DON'T PANIC! (Another Adams reference. Can you tell I'm a fan of his work?)

My health is as fine as it can be for a 63 year old man with a heart condition.
All the behind the scenes stuff happening right now is business, not medical.
But I definitely plan to stay indoors as much as possible over the next few days as my neck of the woods experiences its latest heatwave.
The third so far this year.
Collect them all, if you dare. 😡

In any event, I better get back to writing now.

Still working on SHERLOCK HOLMES: "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly".

"Spare" time that I could dedicate solely to writing was not in much abundance this past week and this week looks uncertain at the moment as I post these words. But I am officially on the second half of the adventure and about to break the 8,000 (out of a projected 15,000) word count.

Will just have to see how things go.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING JULY 12, 2025

To repeat a classic line, SHERLOCK HOLMES knows the game's afoot. He hasn't got the whole mystery solved, but enough to continue investigating "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly" as I enter the second half of this short story.

Yet like I have said before, it not only takes time to craft a mystery, but even more to write one worthy of the Victorian Era's famous consulting detective.
Of course the never ending battle of housework, errands and other responsibilities versus having "free" time to write is another matter.
After all, the entire staff of my household is me, myself and I.😑

In any event, I better get back to writing now.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING JULY 5, 2025

Sometimes I wonder if I might be overthinking the situation, but it seems to me like trying to write a SHERLOCK HOLMES story worthy of the title character is like trying to solve a used jigsaw puzzle you bought at a flea market without the cover picture and no idea whether or not you have all the pieces to begin with.

In any event, work is proceeding apace on "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly", but every day I have to pause at least once to look up some detail about the Victorian Era or information on another related matter.

That is dedication to the writing craft, making sure I've got everything as correct as humanly possible.
The rest is just a question of time, effort and stubbornness.
I'd say I'm approaching, but haven't actually reached the halfway point yet.
Short stories are roughly 15,000 words on average. I haven't even made 10,000 yet, but every time I do get to write adds a little more to the overall manuscript.

Besides telling me that SOLITAIRE 2: THE AGENDA has been proofread and only lacks interior and cover art at this point before publication, Ron Fortier at Airship 27 has inquired how my Holmes work is going, so I know the story has a home when finished.

But to reach that point I better get back to writing now.
Take care.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING JUNE 28, 2025

Last week went all to heck, and I'm not talking about just the heatwave.

It seems like anything that could go wrong did, keeping me busier than an anteater at a picnic.
In any event, hopefully this week will be better.
Despite the fact that I've got a doctor's appointment, errands and the Fourth of July with family in the days ahead.

I did get a little additional writing done on SHERLOCK HOLMES "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly", but unfortunately little is the operative word here.

In any event, I've got to get back to writing now.

 MAN, IS IT HOT OUTSIDE!
And this is just the FIRST day of the projected heatwave!🌞

Holmes immortalized
In any event, staying inside as much as possible and working on my SHERLOCK HOLMES story.
As I've mentioned previously during PROGRESS REPORTS for "The Adventure of the Artful Forger" and "The Adventure of the Unimaginable", crafting a good mystery, let alone one worthy of the Victorian Era's famous Consulting Detective takes a lot of time and effort.
When it's done, hopefully readers will enjoy "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly".

Even the casual Holmes fan would baulk if I got a background detail wrong concerning him and/or Doctor Watson, so it's best to do it write/right the first time instead of having to face countless revisions and rewrites later.

In any event, I better get another drink of water before returning to writing.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING JUNE 7, 2025

It's hard to believe that the year is almost half over and the weather is just now getting decent enough for me to wear both a short sleeve T-shirt and a pair of shorts. Normally I'd already be in Spring/Summer attire by the first week of May at the latest, but this year has been really weird weather wise.

Anyway...

The first of two COMIC BOOK CONTEST ENTRIES is done and I'm working feverishly to complete the second before the Submissions Box opens June 13.
Considering that's a Friday, sounds appropriate for a horror anthology, don't you think?

In any event, after the stories are done and submitted, then I will be returning to SHERLOCK HOLMES and THE ADVENTURE OF THE SHAKESPEAREAN FOLLY unless something else comes up between now and then, but I still haven't heard any new developments on that MAJOR EVENT PENDING as I post this.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING MAY 31, 2025

I paused to remember writer Peter David and did not post a PROGRESS REPORT last weekend. So there is a bit of catching up to do.

Before the memorial post, I did work on my SHERLOCK HOLMES story but while I am more than a third through the manuscript, I haven't reached the halfway point on it yet because I paused working on that to come up with an entry for a HORROR ANTHOLOGY COMIC BOOK SHORT STORY CONTEST.

I am kicking a couple of ideas around. One of the two I've already written and the other is still in progress.
Which of the two or both (if the rules allow it) I'll submit remains to be seen because the submission door doesn't even open until June 13, which happens to be a Friday this year. Hmmm...

Anyway, Horror isn't really my genre; but if it's one thing I've always wanted to do, it's write for a comic book company.
Unfortunately, the closest I've ever come to realizing that goal is editing the independently produced RAYE KNIGHT: SPELLBOUND for my friend Victoria Pagac.
The rest of the time I've always wound up at start up ventures that never get past the "Wouldn't it be nice if..." stage.

All I can do is produce the best short story possible within 8 pages (maximum) of a comic book and hope for the best.
And for those interested, all has been quiet on the MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PENDING front.

In any event, I better get back to writing now.
Take care.

REMEMBERING WRITER PETER DAVID

Writer Peter David is no longer with us.😢

I have no photographs or convention stories to share.
The only times I was ever in actual communication with the man was exchanging a few posts on his blog and contributing Part 78: And Now For Something Completely Different to his Potato Moon round robin.

However, I was "there" when he discussed his struggles trying to lose weight, for that is a battle I have been fighting too since puberty; and I was also "there" as Peter publicly posted about his life, divorce, second marriage and the birth of their daughter either through the blog or his But I Digress column in the pages of the late, lamented Comics Buyers' Guide.

But above all, like many others, I was a major fan of his writing, both in comics and prose.
His wit, well timed and carefully placed even in dire story situations, was always funny.
Who else, in the middle of a Star Trek adventure, could make a reference to a "receding hare line"?
I still would have loved to see Peter tackle Howard the Duck, but David said that was one headache (an issue he never expanded upon and I never pressed) he didn't need.

Yet Aquaman, Supergirl, Young Justice, the Hulk, Spider-man, X-Factor and many more all benefited from his talents.

His wife Kathleen and his daughters have my deepest condolences.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING MAY 17, 2025

Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce as
Sherlock Holmes & Doctor Watson.
Writing/work is proceeding apace on my SHERLOCK HOLMES story: "THE ADVENTURE OF THE
SHAKESPEAREAN FOLLY", but as I said while creating my previous Holmes stories—"The Adventure of the Artful Forger" and "The Adventure of the Unimaginable"—in my humble opinion it takes time (and patience) to craft a mystery worthy of the great Victorian Era Consulting Detective.

Then again, time hasn't really been on my side much lately with all the errands and chores I have to tackle on a regular basis as an ordinary human being when I'm not trying to write.
Things still get done, but on the whole I'd rather be writing than tackling laundry, dirty dishes, cleaning the kitty litter box, etc.
Dirty jobs, but somebody has to do them.
Considering the entire household staff—for want of a better term—is just me, myself and I...

And there are still no new developments concerning that OTHER MATTER at the moment so when I finish my Holmes story, I will either be able to turn my full attention to address that or go on to something else.

In any event, I better get back to writing now.

I'm sure everyone wishes him a speedy recovery.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING MAY 3, 2025

I FINALLY FINISHED PROOFREADING SOLITAIRE 2: THE AGENDA!

The final word count was 59,956. Up 411 words from when I began.
The only delay now is Ron Fortier of Airship 27 wants me to wait on sending it to him until after his Cancer Surgery on May 9.
Considering he's already shared information about this on Facebook, the Airship 27 Flight Log and other places, it's not like I'm revealing some deep dark secret that is supposed to remain private and I'm sure everyone reading these words joins me in wishing Ron good luck and a speedy recovery.

So now to pick up where I left off on the SHERLOCK HOLMES mystery I was working on when I decided trying to bounce back and forth between HOLMES and SOLITAIRE wasn't working and focused just on the lady until that was completed.
The story has gained a (working) title, "The Adventure of the Shakespearean Folly", but I'm only somewhere between a quarter and a third of the way through completing the first draft of that manuscript.
I'm going to have to reread everything I already have and take it from there.

As for that OTHER MATTER I've been eluding to over the last few Progress Reports, until an official public announcement is made by the other party involved I can't go into any greater detail than I already have.
But if you follow the recent Internet comments of a few of my fellow writers carefully, you'll know I'm not alone in the current situation.

In any event, I better get back to writing now.

Alas, I cannot share any details with you at this time because no official announcement has been made public yet. However I can say that what is going on behind the scenes at the moment affects a lot of my past creative catalog and its future.

This new development does mean that I will have to rethink my writing schedule beyond completing the proofreading on SOLITAIRE 2 and finishing that SHERLOCK HOLMES story I was also trying to create when I decided to concentrate my full creative energies on S2 because of all the previous interruptions trying to bounce back and forth between the two.

Only managed to proofread another chapter of SOLITAIRE 2: THE AGENDA this past week, but I've been as busy as a bee🐝 on other matters.

Passed my latest Cardiologist visit April 2. As much as I like my doctor, unfortunately those are practically all day affairs because it's about a 35 mile drive one way just to see him.

Housework, laundry and a lot of other stuff came up which postponed my weekly grocery hunting trip—a term I first coined during the original COVID😷 period this country experienced because of all the empty shelves and long lines in stores—to yesterday.

And on top of all of this, there may be another writing project in my future after I finish proofreading SOLITAIRE 2 and creating that SHERLOCK HOLMES adventure I'm in the middle of, but it's too soon to tell.

PROGRESS REPORT: WEEK ENDING MARCH 29, 2025

I've made it to Chapter 23 of 34 proofreading SOLITAIRE 2: THE AGENDA. Even with all the revisions, additions and other changes I'm still a hair under the 60,000 word mark but it's the quality of the work not the quantity that matters most.

I've also been thinking about my future projects past SOLITAIRE 2.
Next will definitely be finishing that SHERLOCK HOLMES story I was working on concurrently until I decided to concentrate entirely on SOLITAIRE 2 when I had the writing time available.

Beyond that?
At some point I will obviously start working on what will eventually become SOLITAIRE 3, no subtitle at the present time.
There's always ZEPHYR LILY to get back to but horror/fantasy adventure takes time to get "just right" without being cliche or repetitive of everything else out there in that genre.
I still have that SCI FI NOVEL I wrote whose manuscript needs another review before I consider sending it to any potential publisher
AND I've been kicking around some other ideas that unfortunately haven't been developed/grown enough yet to start devoting writing time to them.

All of the above PLUS my first of two semi-annual trips to the Cardiologist this week, my weekly Errands Excursion and taking care of The Free Choice E-zine when I'm not "working" on my own writing.

So I better get back to it now.
